The Top 5 Breweries in San Antonio
By Tara Scott-Johnson, Trulia
Many San Antonians would argue that beer is the fifth food group. Ironically, that argument is factually true. In the early days of beer production, beer wasn’t considered a beverage at all. Conversely, beer was considered an enriched food served as a meal, comparable to bread.
Today, artisan brew masters understand the traditional craft of brewing beer, but with so many discriminating beer drinkers to please, local microbreweries are creating small-batch ales, pilsners, and flavor-infused malt beers to satisfy evolving taste buds across San Antonio.
Alamo Beer Company
Founded in the 1880’s, Alamo Beer went dormant at the beginning of prohibition. In 2014, Alamo began brewing again in an 18,000 square foot brewery, beer hall, and beer garden. Their legendary beer is crafted using traditional brewing methods. The brewery is open for tours Thursdays - Sundays. Alamo Beer Company has added an Amber Lager, Pilsner, German Pale Ale and a variety of seasonals to its portfolio. Visitor and tour parking is located at 202 Lamar Street.
Blue Star Brewing Company
Established in 1996, Blue Star Brewing Company is found at the beginning of Mission Reach, a major bike and pedestrian thoroughfare to the city’s cultural and historical features that run along the San Antonio River. The restaurant and bar offers a beer-friendly menu consisting of wings, burgers, sandwiches, and their famous beer cheese dip served with pretzel rolls. This hot spot makes 100% organic beer and serves ten craft brews. Visit Blue Star Brewing Company at 1414 S. Alamo #105.
The Granary Cue & Brew
The Granary is a restaurant and brewery that celebrates barbecue and beer. It is located in the historic Pearl Brewery, the second brewery founded in San Antonio in 1883. The Pearl Brewery was reinvented in 2001 and has become a live, work, and play community filled with restaurants, retail shops, and workspaces. The Granary is proud to call the Pearl its home at 602 Avenue A. Unique craft brews found at The Granary include: Rye Saison, Coffee Ipa, and Brown Ale. They also produce house-brewed sodas and root beer.
Ranger Creek Brewery & Distillery
The Ranger Creek “Brewstillery” is the only brewery/distillery in Texas. The popular Brewstillery Tour is two tours in one. The Saturday only tour not only explains how Ranger Creek makes their beer, but you’ll also learn how they make bourbon. By the end of the tour, you’ll understand the fascinating relationship between the two. The “Tasting Room” is open Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm - 9pm with samplings of beer, whisky, and unique beer cocktails. A rotating menu of food options that pairs with the evening's drink selections are available. Visit Ranger Creek Brewery & Distillery at 4834 Whirlwind Drive, on the city’s North side.
5 Stones Artisan Brewery
5 Stones Artisan Brewery is dedicated to brewing unique and flavorful beers. Aloha Pina, a beer brewed with pineapple and jalapeno, put 5 Stones on the discriminating beer drinkers’ radar. Other popular brews include: Manmosa, crafted with pulverized oranges, and Norma Jeane, sweetened with fresh strawberries and vanilla beans. Located in the neighboring city of Cibolo, TX, at 850 Schneider Drive, Unit G, the brewery isn’t open for tasting just yet, but they do host special events.
