5 Reasons to Visit SA in 2016 and beyond

San Antonio is abuzz with all the attention it's been getting in travel sites as one of the top destinations in the world, recently taking the #2 spot in Budget Travel's "Where to Go in 2016." But we all already know San Antonio is a gem. We live and breathe this city every day. We decided to come up with our very own list of the places and activities we love around town. We had to narrow down our list to five because, well, otherwise we could be here all day (and we've got tacos to eat).

King William Historic District

Take a stroll through one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city to admire the eloquent 19th-century homes, which showcases some impressive Victorian- and Italianate-style architecture. Of course, great restaurants, shops, and cafes abound, but sometimes you just need to take a moment to admire some awe-inspiring architecture.

McNay Art Museum

Named after founder Marion Koogler McNay, the first museum of modern art in Texas was established in San Antonio in 1954. The museum houses approximately 20,000 works in its American, European, and Southwestern collections of paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, glass art, and more. You can find some great upcoming exhibitions too, like Meet the Future 2016: A Pop-up Exhibition, which highlights the work of San Antonio-based artists.

Fiesta

If you're new to the city and not familiar with Fiesta, you'll learn right away that the 10-day celebration, held every year in April, is almost like a rite of passage for many locals. What started as a small parade commemorating the heroes from the Battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto, Fiesta has become a city-wide celebration of culture with food, music, and plenty of fun! This year marks the 125th anniversary of Fiesta. Here's a list of events for this year's celebration.

Maverick Music Festival

Nestled within the La Villita Historic Arts Village, Maverick Music Festival is the premier indie musical festival in San Antonio. The festival focuses on bringing local musicians and artists to the local spotlight. BarbacoApparel had the pleasure of attending the festival last year (Cake, anyone?), and despite the gloomy weather we had an all around blast! The festival also brings bands and artists that would otherwise skip SA had it not been for a festival like Maverick. For that we are finally grateful. And nothing beats catching a live performance at the unique Arneson River Theatre.

The Historic Pearl

The Pearl District is the paradigm of old mixed with the new, cultivating a live, work, and play environment on the River Walk's Museum Reach. The 19th-century brewery proper is now home to the new Hotel Emma, which is nothing short of spectacular in every right. The Pearl offers plenty of fine dining  options―some of the best nationally ranked restaurants in the country, actually― that are sure to whet your appetite, while clothing boutiques and other retailers offer styles for everyone, including Barbacoapparel at Leighelena and Roo & Me! And if you're in the "market" for fresh, local produce, stop by the Farmers Market on the weekends. There is always something happening at the Pearl! To make sure you don't miss out, keep up-to-date on events happening year-round.
